YOUR FUTURE STARTS HERE: A NEW CHAPTER FOR SIXTH FORM AT ST EDMUND’ S
Sixth Form is a time to think bigger: to follow your interests, find your voice and begin shaping what comes next. At St Edmund’ s, that journey combines academic ambition with individual support, a welcoming school community and a new Sixth Form Centre that gives students a place of their own.
The centre reflects the independence of these two years. Study pods and quiet spaces provide room to concentrate, prepare and explore ideas in depth, while common rooms offer somewhere to relax and catch up with friends. Students can take greater responsibility for their time between lessons, balancing work with the friendships that make Sixth Form memorable.
“ Having our own Sixth Form Centre makes a difference. There are quiet places to get work done and spaces to spend time with friends. You have more independence, but your teachers are still there when you need help,” says a St Ed’ s sixth former.
Choice is important in the classroom. Our broad subject offering spans sciences, mathematics and humanities alongside creative disciplines including ceramics, photography, drama and music technology. Students can deepen existing interests, discover new ones and build a programme that reflects their strengths and aspirations.
Small classes create opportunities for discussion, challenge and individual attention. Teachers get to know how each pupil learns, making time to work through difficulties and encourage deeper thinking. That personal approach extends to the dedicated SEN and Learning Enhancement area, providing a space for additional support within the Sixth Form experience.
Alongside subject teachers, tutors provide a point of contact for advice, encouragement and conversations about how things are going. As students take on more responsibility, that network helps them move forward with confidence.
There is plenty to explore beyond lessons, too. Sport, concerts, drama productions, clubs and trips offer opportunities to contribute, try something unfamiliar and develop interests that last beyond school. Sixth Form should be a time of achievement, enjoyment and discovery.
Preparation for the future runs throughout. Careers sessions and visiting speakers introduce different professions and possibilities, while individual guidance helps students connect their interests with potential next steps. There is time to ask questions, reconsider plans and explore unfamiliar options before deciding which direction feels right.
“ We give every student time to explore their interests, consider careers and understand the pathways available,” says Mr Symaka, head of Sixth Form.“ Whether guiding a UCAS application or exploring apprenticeships, our support is shaped around the individual and their ambitions.”
Looking ahead, we are exploring the introduction of BTEC options in 2027, with the aim of offering further choice for different interests, strengths and ambitions.
Discover what your next chapter could look like at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 17 November. Explore our new centre, meet students and teachers, and talk through the subjects, opportunities and support that could help shape your future. Whether you have a clear ambition or are beginning to explore, we look forward to welcoming you and your family to St Ed’ s.
