What materials, colours and furnishing were chosen to complement the project? And how did this impact the final result? The soft aqua turquoise was the colour that informed the scheme and the instant that you walk into the room, the colour works; not just as a historical backdrop, but the scheme seems to reflect natural daylight around the room, giving a sense of luminosity. A pair of original 1930’ s aluminium lamps that sit on a three-drawer marble-topped chest is a nod to the iconic era and a vintage Bo Concept egg chair and Louis De Poortere 100 % wool rug give the room a quirky but cool vibe.
Kevin painted the ceiling in white and the skirtings and joinery were also coated in a white eggshell Dulux paint finish. The solid oak doors were coated with a white water-based woodstain that enhances the oak grain. A Scandinavian matt black contemporary light fitting unifies the theme and matches the matt black door handles. A large black leather sofa just about squeezes into the bay window area, making the most of the available space in the room.

At some level, we just knew that all the disparate items of contemporary and antique furniture would work together. The judges at the Architecture Collection agreed. When we submitted the project, we heard nothing for several months, so we assumed that our entry had not been selected, and then came the email announcing that we had won the Gold Award.
The trophy we received is incredible and winning any award is always great for staff morale- it is a way of saying‘ you’ ve got it right!’. We are now busy designing our next project- a country cottage kitchen but with a modern twist, with a heated natural limestone floor, glossy black handleless kitchen doors, high-end SMEG appliances throughout and a vintage iron spiral staircase.
