CELEBRATING A YEAR OF CREATIVITY IN MAIDSTONE
CREATIVE MAIDSTONE COMMUNITY ARTS HUB OPENED ITS DOORS WITH AN AMBITIOUS VISION: TO CREATE A WELCOMING SPACE WHERE CREATIVITY COULD FLOURISH, LOCAL ARTISTS COULD THRIVE AND BOTH RESIDENTS AND VISITORS COULD DISCOVER THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF THE ARTS. TODAY, HAVING CELEBRATED ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY IN THE SUMMER, THAT VISION HAS BECOME A VIBRANT REALITY.
From vision to reality
Since launching in July 2025, the hub has welcomed thousands of people through its doors, quickly establishing itself as a dynamic centre for arts, culture and community life in the heart of Maidstone. Whether through exhibitions, workshops, classes or events, Creative Maidstone has helped bring people together, encouraging creativity, connection and a shared sense of pride in the borough’ s rich cultural offer.
Highlights from a remarkable first year
Over the past year, visitors have enjoyed a diverse and exciting programme of activity. One of the standout moments was a special exhibition celebrating the life and work of the much-loved artist and television personality Tony Hart, which attracted visitors from across the country. The hub has also played an important role in supporting major cultural events, partnering with One Maidstone to deliver the popular Light Up Maidstone Festival and helping create memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike.
Art for everyone
A key part of the hub’ s mission is making art accessible to everyone. Through its affordable art exhibitions, Creative Maidstone has helped remove barriers that can often discourage people from purchasing original artwork, giving more people the opportunity to take home high-quality pieces created by talented local artists.
Showcasing the best of local creativity, the hub’ s Artisan Shop has become a destination in its own right, showcasing the work of more than 30 local artists and makers. Visitors can browse an ever-changing collection of handcrafted ceramics, jewellery, greeting cards, gifts and original artwork, while directly supporting independent creatives from across the local area.
Connecting people through creativity
The Workshop Zone has grown into a thriving creative space buzzing with activity throughout the week. From painting classes and craft sessions to a popular knitting group, the programme offers opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to learn new skills, explore their creativity and meet like-minded people. These activities have helped foster a strong sense of community, demonstrating how the arts can play a vital role in supporting wellbeing and social connection.
Exciting new opportunities ahead
Looking ahead, the introduction of a new Members Maker Space marks an exciting next chapter for Creative Maidstone. Equipped with specialist facilities including printing presses, screen-printing equipment, sewing machines, die-cutting tools and dedicated painting areas, the space will provide even greater opportunities for amateur and professional artists to develop their skills and creative practice.
Made possible through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and supported by Maidstone Borough Council, Creative Maidstone has become far more than a gallery or workshop venue. It is a place where creativity is nurtured, talent is championed and communities come together.
As local artist and studio resident, Ayse Akay reflects:“ Creative Maidstone has provided not just a place to exhibit artwork, but a supportive creative community where artists feel encouraged, inspired and valued. After an exceptional first year, the hub is already making a lasting impact and its future looks brighter than ever.”
