MELANIE JOHNSSON DESIGNER melanie @ sidewaysmedia. co. uk
Originally from France, I moved from London to Kent over eight years ago and I haven’ t looked back. I fell in love with Margate, its creative energy and its ever-growing food scene. Being by the sea is healing and inspiring at the same time, and it has helped me develop my creative practice, too. When I’ m not art directing, designing or illustrating, you’ ll find me swimming, surfing or kitesurfing around the Isle of Thanet.
I also love martial arts and yoga, which I do locally. The thing I love most about Kent, though, is the people and friends I’ ve made; from chefs and nurses to photographers and sports instructors, everyone here has found a little slice of( sunny) heaven they wouldn’ t trade for anything.

TOP ACTIVITY ALCHEMY MARTIAL ARTS
I started training in jiu-jitsu a few months ago and it’ s been both very hard and very fun. I’ m now also taking my five-year-old daughter to train because I believe it’ s an essential skill! I recommend this sport to anyone wanting to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
TOP FOOD THE GOOD EGG
I won’ t stop telling people about The Good Egg and their delicious Middle Eastern-inspired food. Try their mushroom reuben- a delicious pitta stuffed with braised oyster mushrooms, kraut, crispy onions and Russian dressing- and finish things off with their tasty tahini and halva chocolate brownie for a sweet treat.
TOP SHOP ON A WHIM
Brought to life by my friends Anna and Will, this whimsical Margate shop is a super cute treasure trove of gifts, jewellery, cards, bath and body products, magazines, scents and stationery- it’ s full of magic and the most beautiful and original curation, if you ask me.
