THE LION KING:

THE PRIDE LANDS ROAR ON IN THE WEST END

in PREVIEW

More than a quarter of a century since it first roared into London’ s West End, The Lion King continues to reign supreme at the Lyceum Theatre. Since its UK premiere in 1999, Disney’ s extraordinary stage adaptation has captivated millions, becoming not just a beloved musical but a landmark of modern theatre. With cast refreshes bringing new energy to the Pride Lands alongside brotherhoods that date back over 20 years, the production remains as breathtaking and emotionally resonant as ever.

At the heart of the show is its ever-evolving cast, a company that blends long-standing West End legends with exciting new talent. Returning to the role of Simba is Stephenson Ardern-Sodje, whose powerful presence and soaring vocals capture the journey of the young lion destined for greatness. Having previously performed the role on the UK and Ireland tour, Ardern- Sodje brings both experience and renewed passion to Simba’ s quest to discover his place in the‘ Circle of Life’.
Alongside him, the production continues to benefit from the remarkable longevity of several iconic performances. George Asprey remains deliciously wicked as Scar, a role he has inhabited for two decades with an irresistible blend of menace and theatrical flair. Opposite him, Shaun Escoffery’ s commanding Mufasa delivers warmth, authority and emotional depth, anchoring the show’ s most powerful moments with his
rich baritone voice and a fatherly presence that extends offstage to nurture the familial cast.
Equally spellbinding is Thenjiwe Nofemele as Rafiki, whose soulful performance brings spiritual resonance and vibrant authenticity to the production. Her electrifying rendition of‘ He Lives in You’ and of course her opening lyrical enchantment of‘ Circle of Life’ continues to send shivers through audiences night after night, transforming the theatre into the vast plains of the Serengeti. Merryl Ansah’ s poised and spirited Nala adds strength and heart to Simba’ s story, while Gary Jordan’ s Zazu and Alan McHale’ s Timon provide wit and comic timing in abundance.
The beloved duo of Timon and Pumbaa are joined by Pierre van Heerden’ s exuberant take on the latter, bringing fresh comedic charm to the carefree philosophy of Hakuna Matata. Meanwhile, the mischievous hyena trio- including Sadia McEwen as Shenzi alongside Jorell Coiffic-Kamall and Mark Tatham- inject the production with sharp humour and dramatic tension.
Of course, The Lion King’ s magic extends far beyond its cast. Directed by the visionary Julie Taymor, the show remains one of the most visually inventive productions ever staged. Its ingenious fusion of puppetry, masks and costume design transforms performers into giraffes, elephants, birds and lions before the audience’ s eyes. The unforgettable opening procession, where animals sweep through the aisles to the
pulse of African drums, remains one of theatre’ s most awe-inspiring moments.
Complemented by the unforgettable score by Sir Elton John, Tim Rice and Lebo M, songs like‘ I Just Can’ t Wait to Be King’ and‘ Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ deepen the emotional impact, resonating with audiences long after the final curtain falls.
Yet the enduring power of The Lion King lies in its universal story. Themes of family, identity, loss and redemption run through every chapter, reminding the audience that courage and compassion define true leadership. It’ s a tale that speaks just as powerfully to adults as it does to children experiencing the magic of the theatre production for the first time.
With a vibrant cast and unparalleled artistry that has defined it for over 25 years, The Lion King remains a spectacular celebration of storytelling, music and imagination. Whether returning to the Pride Lands or discovering them anew, audiences can be certain of one thing- an awe-inspiring theatre experience that shows no sign of slowing down.
The Lion King is currently showing at the Lyceum Theatre, with performances Tuesday to Sunday at 7.30pm, and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets start at £ 38.95pp with group and educational rates available.
