EXPLORING WITH...
GEMMA ANDREWS DESIGNER gemma @ sidewaysmedia. co. uk
I recently joined the team at insideKENT as graphic designer, contributing to editorial design. The interiors section is always my favourite to work on and I love seeing beautifully considered spaces and local stories come together on the page. I live in Whitstable and work from my garden studio, where I also design brands and websites.
As the seasons shift, my family and I spend as much time outdoors as possible. We are very lucky where we live to have woodland and beaches right on our doorstep, and Mabel, our one-year-old Golden Retriever, is just as happy in the woods as she is by the sea. This spring we are looking forward to a visit to Nethergong Camping, making the most of lighter evenings and time spent outside.
Outside of work, I try to be intentional about stepping away from the screen. I have been regularly weight training at Snap Fitness since it opened locally, which helps offset the time I spend at my desk. I also love to draw as it gives me space to be creative in a more physical, tactile way. This year I have committed to life drawing classes, which feels like a welcome counterbalance to screen-heavy days.

TOP ACTIVITY
Horsebridge Arts Centre Alongside visiting the gallery on the ground floor, I occasionally take part in art classes at Horsebridge Arts Centre. It’ s a great way to step away from screens and reconnect with making. Last year I learnt to create charcoal drawings, which was both challenging and hugely rewarding.
TOP DAY OUT
Belmont House and Gardens One of my favourite places for a relaxed day out, I genuinely feel my shoulders drop as soon as we arrive. We’ ll often bring a picnic and watch the nearby cows, or stop for tea and cake at the tea room in the old stable block. It’ s a beautiful place to linger, especially on a calm spring afternoon.
TOP BAR
Porto Wine Bar Tucked away on Whitstable’ s Harbour Street, Porto Wine Bar is tiny but perfectly formed, with impeccable service and a beautifully curated wine list. My go-to for a small, sophisticated glass of something dry, and the ideal spot for relaxed, grown-up girl chats.
