massing, materials and layout. Rather than creating additions that feel imposed, we aim to design buildings that sit comfortably within their setting, responding to the character of the landscape and the existing structure. This approach often proves key in achieving positive planning outcomes.

How did you find the balance between an excellent design-led refurb which also kept to budget? Budget is always an important consideration, and the earlier it is addressed the better. For Brookside Barn, the priority was maintaining strong visual connections to the garden. Generous glazing was essential, but we balanced this by keeping other elements straightforward and using traditional construction where possible. Avoiding unnecessary complexity can make a significant difference, allowing the budget to be focused where it has the greatest impact. Thoughtful, well-judged changes often achieve more than extensive alterations.

Did you offer any interior styling solutions / advice for the home? While we always consider layouts, furniture arrangements and views when designing a space, we felt it was important to allow the clients’ own style to come through. The interiors reflect their personality and choices, and they deserve full credit for the warm and inviting atmosphere that has been created. Our role was to provide the architectural framework that allowed this to happen.
What are your hints and tips for those looking to embark on a property renovation project? It’ s completely natural to want to start quickly, particularly when a project has been in mind for some time. However, rushing the design stage can often lead to challenges later on. The early phases are the best time to explore options, test ideas and refine priorities. For clients moving into a new home, we often suggest living in the space for a short while before final decisions are made. Many find their understanding of how they want to use the house evolves once they’ ve experienced it day to day.
