FAMILY FUN THAT BEATS TO ITS OWN RHYTHM …

HARD ROCK HOTEL RIVIERA MAYA

BY SAMANTHA READY

Part of the iconic music brand, Hard Rock Hotel’ s second Mexican outpost has been a stalwart of the sweeping Riviera Mayan coastline for a decade. Yet a programme of thoughtful expansion and a recent lean geared towards its family customers( the resort is split into adult-only and family sides) has entered it into a new generation of energetic long-haul holidaying.

I’ d argue that there are few more impressive entrances for family wow factor than arriving at the sprawling Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. From excited gasps of“ it’ s a monkey!” from the littlest Ready as the playful resident apes swung from branch to branch criss-crossing the approach, to“ OMG did you see the giant guitar! Look, there’ s a whole stadium!” from the music-loving middle one, and of course“ did you know they have a room service guitar menu, too?” from the rockstar-inwaiting Mr Ready, it’ s safe to say that I was already relaxing into the knowledge that this was one holiday where every one of my energetic brood was going to be happy.
Energy is part of the DNA at Hard Rock Riviera Maya, but what may surprise you most, as it did me, is how effortlessly that energy translates into a genuinely seamless family experience. This is a resort that plays loud- yes there are guitars and amps for your room, bold murals, live entertainment from rock concerts to Michael Jackson tribute acts and pop-up performances at every turn- yet somehow the offering still finds room for calm, comfort and clever design.
Our room( though in fact we had lucked out with an interconnecting suite) set the tone immediately: spacious, cool and waiting with our pre-ordered Fender. The kids’ side boasted twin queen beds, a jacuzzi tub and a massive shower with access to its own balcony with views of the sea, while our side was a duplex room with a clever hidden staircase behind the headboard leading to a massive rooftop terrace complete with jacuzzi, sunloungers and bar seats. And of course both rooms connected with an interior door for perfect family space with that added layer of access.
Outside, the footprint of the family side stretches along calm lagoon-like waters with sweeping pools, bars, food shacks and activity zones framed by swaying palm trees. Days unfold in their own rhythm: there’ s the waterpark, where the kids burned through hours of slides and splash zones; Roxity Kids Club, brilliantly run and wildly creative; the Ready kids’ fave- Vibe City, the resort’ s sprawling indoor, airconditioned paradise of games, music and extra fun- think bowling, escape rooms and trampoline park rolled into one; and of course the on-site performances spread between the performance centre and the theatre, where evening gigs echo Hard Rock’ s rock-n-roll heritage. It is in every sense, entertainment without pause …
Yet, amongst the buzz,( which extends until the early hours if you are child-free and making use of the on-site nightclub!), there is some welcome tranquility, too. For amongst the dopamine-seeking Ready energy, my rhythm came from The Rock Spa ®. A cavernous and simply stunning complex overlooking the lapping waves
