GIVE A GIFT THAT REALLY MATTERS...

A CHAT WITH BRIDGER’ S LAW ABOUT WILLS

AS WE HEAD INTO THE SEASON OF GIVING, IT’ S EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP IN THE RUSH OF PRESENTS, PARTIES AND PLANNING. BUT, WHAT IF ONE OF THE MOST MEANINGFUL GIFTS YOU COULD GIVE THIS YEAR ISN’ T SOMETHING YOU WRAP UP WITH A BOW?
We spoke with Alanna Forwood, solicitor in the Wills and Probate team at Bridger’ s Law, who shared this insight:
“ A will ensures that your assets are distributed in line with your wishes rather than the strict rules of intestacy, which may not reflect your personal circumstances and intentions. Having a valid will in place can help reduce stress and uncertainty for your loved ones at an already difficult time. It can be used to appoint guardians for minor children, set out specific funeral wishes, or make gifts to friends or charities. While you can write a will yourself, being guided by a solicitor can give you peace of mind that it has been prepared correctly, clearly sets out your wishes and avoids the risk of errors that could cause confusion or disputes later on.”
With that in mind, we continued our conversation with the Bridger’ s Law team about how making a will is often overlooked but incredibly important, and as it turns out, it’ s not just about legalities. It’ s about love, legacy and giving your family peace of mind.. So … Why should I even think about making a will? Honestly? Because life is unpredictable. A will is your way of saying:‘ I’ ve got this sorted’. It’ s not just about money or property, it’ s about making sure your wishes are clear, your loved ones are looked after and there’ s no confusion or stress when you’ re not around to explain things.
Is it just for people with loads of assets? Not at all. Everyone has something worth passing on, whether it’ s your home, your savings, or even sentimental things like your grandmother’ s ring or your favourite LEGO ® collection. A will lets you decide who gets what and that can mean a lot to the people you care about.
Can I include personal stuff in my will? Absolutely. You can include anything that matters to you, big or small. From naming guardians for your children to leaving a donation to a charity you love, it’ s all about making sure your values and relationships are honoured. Some people even include letters or messages for their family. It’ s your story, your way.
How is a will actually a gift? It’ s the gift of peace of mind. Imagine your family not having to guess what you would’ ve wanted. No arguments, no uncertainty, just a clear plan that helps them feel confident they’ re doing right by you. That’ s a huge relief during an emotional time.
Can I choose exactly who gets what? Yes! That’ s one of the best things about having a will. You’ re in control. Whether it’ s your house, your jewellery, or a donation to a cause close to your heart, you get to decide. It’ s especially important if you want to leave something to friends, stepchildren or anyone who wouldn’ t automatically inherit.
I’ ve got a cause close to my heart – can I include that in my will? You absolutely can and it’ s a beautiful way to make a lasting impact. Many people choose to leave a gift to a charity that’ s meant something to them. At Bridger’ s
Law, we’ re proud to support Bipolar UK and we’ ve seen how legacy gifts can make a real difference. Even a small donation can help a charity continue its work and touch more lives. It’ s a powerful way to leave a positive mark on the world.
Okay, I’ d like to make a will. What’ s the first step? Just get in touch. We’ ll walk you through everything, answer your questions and make sure your will reflects your wishes. It’ s simpler than you think and it’ s one of the most thoughtful things you can do for your family.
