HOME + GARDEN

DECEMBER in THE GARDEN...

December is a quieter month in the garden- a time for rest, planning and gentle pottering rather than big projects. These essential tasks will keep your garden healthy and ready for the new year, however.

Protect Plants from Frost Wrap tender plants with horticultural fleece or bubble wrap. Check that coverings are secure but allow some airflow to prevent mould. Group pots together in a sheltered spot for extra protection.
Prune Apple and Pear Trees While trees are dormant, prune apples and pears to improve shape and airflow. Remove dead or crossing branches and shorten vigorous growth. Don’ t prune stone fruits( like cherries and plums) now; wait for summer.
Clean Greenhouses and Tools Scrub greenhouse glass and staging to maximise winter light and reduce pests. Clean and oil tools to keep them rust-free over winter. Use a solution of vinegar and water for eco-friendly glass cleaning.
Feed the Birds Food is scarce for birds now. Keep feeders stocked and provide fresh water daily. In return, they’ ll help control garden pests next year. Use a mix of seeds, suet and fruit for a varied diet.
Plan Next Year’ s Garden Browse seed catalogues, sketch planting plans and decide on new projects. Planning now means you’ ll be ready to hit the ground running in spring. Keep a gardening journal to track successes and what you’ d change for next year.
