BRUNCH GOALS AT
CAFÉ LOUNGE
ROCHESTER
BY SAMANTHA READY
If you’ ve ever strolled down Rochester High Street on a weekend morning, you’ ll know the sight- a neat line of eager brunch-goers snaking patiently along the pavement, phones in hand and coffee aromas floating on the breeze. Café Lounge has become something of an Instagrammable institution … and for good reason.
The décor alone- soft blush tones, botanical accents, terrazzo tables and a glow of natural light against a backdrop of heritage architecture- feels designed for both indulgence and the perfect overhead snaps for social sharing( and the perfect flat white for that matter!). But, the real allure lies in the menu: a love letter to brunch in all its forms, from light and wholesome to unapologetically decadent.
Sought-after table secured, the next issue is just what to choose from the menu that is literally bursting with all the brunch options. You can keep things classic with avocado on sourdough or homemade granola, or- as we did- lean fully into the occasion and order a spread that dances somewhere between breakfast, lunch and dessert.
The‘ Brioche Beast’ arrived first and lived up to its name- a golden brioche bun bursting with pulled beef, caramelised onions, soft scrambled eggs and truffle mayo. It was rich, deeply savoury and, frankly, magnificent; the kind of dish that silences a table for a few moments( quite the feat when said table is surrounded by hungry Readys) before the inevitable‘ you have to try this’. Next came the Maple Bacon Pancakes, a towering stack dripping with maple syrup and butter crowned with sticky streaky bacon, grilled plantain and a wisp of cotton candy. Add a slab of buttermilk chicken and you’ ll be( as I was) firmly in sweet-salty heaven- indulgent without being heavy, playful without feeling gimmicky.
For something lighter, the Matcha Pancakes were beautiful in both presentation and flavour. The house-made matcha batter gave a subtle earthiness that balanced perfectly with berry compote, vanilla Chantilly, maple syrup and a scattering of fresh fruit. A true brunch showpiece, and one that almost felt too pretty to eat. Almost.
On the lunch slant, the Chicken Burger more than held its own: crisp buttermilk
chicken layered with mixed leaves, red onion, gherkins and jalapeño sauce inside a pillowy brioche bun. It was sharp, spicy and satisfyingly messy. Much to truffle and Parmesan connoisseur Jaxon’ s delight, Café Lounge’ s fries were the ideal sidekick- fragrant, salty and addictive- while honey halloumi delivered that perfect balance of heat and sweetness.
Of course any great brunch feast needs great beverages, too. We ran the gamut from rich cappuccinos and matcha lattes to a Biscoff milkshake that was pure nostalgia in a glass, and even the hot chocolate, piled with whipped cream, felt like a small celebration.
As we left, the queue outside had only grown longer- proof that Café Lounge isn’ t just a brunch spot; it’ s become a weekend ritual. Aesthetically beautiful, flawlessly executed and filled with energy, it delivers everything you want from a modern brunch: generous plates, good coffee and that unmistakable feeling that this is the place to be.
