REAL HOMES
hurdles. Progress slowed in places, but it taught us the importance of getting a full build estimate early, being transparent about budget and making sure contractors have the most detailed drawings possible.
How did you balance design and budget? The key is knowing where to invest and where to hold back. I restored the staircase instead of replacing it, sanded original floorboards and tried to revive the fireplace before replacing it. These decisions preserved character while controlling costs. By combining thoughtful updates in key areas with respect for existing features, I achieved a design-led finish that feels elevated yet authentic.
Where do you begin with styling a home? Styling should create calm, not clutter. I usually start with a focal point- a rug, a table, a mirror or a piece of art- then layer in textures and materials. For example, in this house the dining area was built around a solid oak table and black wishbone chairs, with a sculptural pendant above. The restored original wood floors set a warm, authentic foundation, grounding the space and adding timeless character. Together, these elements created a strong focal point with a touch of contemporary elegance.
What common mistakes did you avoid? Overspending too early is a big one. I left a budget for finishing touches, which made all the difference. Choosing the right contractors was also crucial- I always get at least three quotes, check references and don’ t automatically go for the cheapest. I also invested in quality materials to ensure the renovation would last.
What are you most proud of? Transforming a tired property into a modern, familyfriendly home that feels connected to its setting. The three-year journey taught me patience and problemsolving, and it allowed me to build lasting relationships with tradespeople I still work with today. Most of all, I’ m proud that the house reflects the ethos of my studio: thoughtful design, respect for character and spaces that are both functional and beautiful.
What tips would you give to someone starting a renovation? Invest time upfront. Be clear on your goals, secure planning permissions and line up a reliable builder before you start. Expect the process to take longer and cost more than you think, and always build in contingency. Above all, be patient- renovations aren’ t quick, but when you stay true to your vision, the results are always worth it.
