in THE GARDEN... |
September signals the gentle turn towards autumn. While summer lingers, the golden light and cooling temperatures mark a shift in the garden. It’ s time to gather, tidy and begin planting for 2026. Plant Spring-Flowering Bulbs Daffodils, crocuses, alliums and hyacinths can all be planted this month. Prepare soil by loosening and adding organic matter for strong root growth. Plant in groups of odd numbers for naturalistic drifts and maximum impact.

Refresh Tired Pots and Baskets Remove fading summer bedding and replace with autumn colour- think violas, pansies, ornamental cabbages and small grasses. Add trailing ivy or miniature cyclamen for texture and interest.
Divide Perennials Early autumn is ideal for lifting and dividing overcrowded clumps of plants like geraniums, hostas and daylilies, then you can choose to replant or share with friends! Water well after replanting and keep an eye on moisture levels in dry spells.

Continue Harvesting and Storing Pick apples, pears, plums, squashes and late potatoes. Store in cool, dark places and check regularly for signs of rot. Lay apples in a single layer on newspaper( not touching) for best longevity.
Prepare the Lawn Scarify( rake out thatch), aerate and feed your lawn this month for healthier growth. Overseed bare patches and keep watered during dry weather. Choose a lawn feed high in potassium for autumn resilience.
