How did you blend Hartdene’ s exceptional rural location with a luxurious, contemporary homebuild? We embraced the landscape and didn’ t fight it. The barns were carefully imagined to take advantage of natural light, open views and privacy. Inside, the homes are modern and light-filled, yet grounded in the warmth of their rural past.
It was about amplifying the beauty of the countryside rather than distracting from it. Even the landscaping was designed with biodiversity and permaculture principles in mind. An onsite World War II bomb crater was reimagined as a wellbeing area which also acts as Hartdene’ s attenuation tank in the form of a beautiful landscaped pond.
What were the biggest challenges in meeting RIBA Climate Challenge standards? Cost! Many of the low-carbon, high-performance products we used still come at a premium, simply because the market demand isn’ t where it needs to be yet. That lack of scale inflates prices and limits supplier options. Another hurdle was tackling embodied carbon, the emissions baked into materials and construction. Traditional building products simply wouldn’ t cut it, so we had to be selective with our sourcing.

What were your hopes behind establishing a partnership with Roots Allotments? The partnership with Roots Allotments was a natural extension of our philosophy that sustainability isn’ t just about the building, but the lifestyle. By offering residents access to organic growing spaces just a short walk from their home, we’ re encouraging a reconnection with food, community and the land itself.
What are you most proud of? There’ s a lot to be proud of with Hartdene Barns, but if we had to pick one thing, it’ s not just achieving carbon net-zero status, which means exceptionally energy-efficient homes, but also becoming a UK first to meet RIBA Climate Challenge targets.
