JULY

in THE GARDEN...

July is high summer, a time when the garden is at its most colourful and productive. But while it may look lush, it still needs careful attention to keep it thriving through dry spells and heatwaves.

Here are your must-do jobs this month:
1. Feed Fruit and Veg Plants Hungry crops such as tomatoes, courgettes and peppers will reward fortnightly feeding with a high-potash fertiliser( like tomato feed). This supports fruiting and flowering. Liquid seaweed is an excellent organic allround tonic.
2. Deadhead Flowers Regularly Keep beds and borders blooming by removing spent flowers. This encourages many plants like roses, cosmos and dahlias to produce more blooms. Snip just above a leaf joint for neat results and healthier regrowth.
3. Water Wisely Hot, dry weather can quickly stress plants. Focus on watering deeply a few times a week rather than giving light daily sprinkles. Prioritise thirsty crops like tomatoes, cucumbers and pots. Water early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation and prevent scorching and remember to adhere to any water restrictions like hosepipe bans.
4. Harvest Often Pick peas, beans, salad leaves and courgettes regularly to prolong their cropping. Many vegetables will stop producing if left too long. Lift first maincrop potatoes to check size, leave them in the ground longer for bigger tubers.
5. Support Tall Plants Fast-growing blooms like delphiniums and sunflowers may need extra staking to avoid wind damage. Use natural twine and bamboo canes to blend support into the border’ s aesthetic.
