JUNE

in THE GARDEN...

June is a glorious month in the garden, with flowers in full bloom and vegetable plants beginning to produce. Warmer weather means plenty of time outdoors, but also the need to keep plants hydrated and maintained. Here’ s what to do this month …

1. Keep Watering and Mulching As temperatures rise, consistent watering is essential. Newly planted flowers and vegetables need extra attention, particularly in dry spells. Applying mulch around plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water deeply a few times a week rather than little and often to encourage deep root growth.
2. Harvest Early Vegetables June brings the first harvests of salad leaves, radishes, peas and early potatoes. Regular picking encourages plants to keep producing. Cut lettuce and spinach leaves rather than pulling up whole plants to enjoy multiple harvests.
3. Prune Spring-Flowering Shrubs Once shrubs like lilacs, forsythia and weigela have finished flowering, prune them to maintain shape and encourage strong growth for next year’ s blooms. Cut back old flowering stems but avoid heavy pruning, as next year’ s flowers develop on this season’ s growth.
4. Deadhead and Feed Summer Flowers Regular deadheading of roses, petunias and geraniums encourages continuous flowering. Feed container plants and hanging baskets with a high-potash fertiliser every two weeks. Pinch out side shoots on tomato plants to direct energy into fruit production.
5. Keep an Eye Out for Pests With warm weather comes an increase in garden pests such as aphids and caterpillars. Check plants regularly and use organic solutions such as companion planting, insecticidal soap, or encouraging natural predators like ladybirds. Planting marigolds among vegetables helps deter aphids and attract pollinators.
