Enjoy Afternoon tea at The Moat Tea Rooms
FOOD + DRINK promptly devoured. This was followed by two beautifully soft, light and pillowy brioche buns, one filled with homemade egg mayonnaise and garden-fresh cress with just the right tang, the other with smoked salmon and a whipped lemon and dill cream cheese that sang with citrus brightness. Veggie sticks and hummus added a lighter touch, while the sun-dried tomato and pesto quiche delivered a punch of Mediterranean flavour in each buttery bite.
Then came the stars of any true afternoon tea: the scones. And these were up there with the best I’ ve had – crisp-edged, tender-centred, buttery and crumbly in all the right ways. Served warm( hurrah) with sweet jam and lashings of clotted cream, they were utterly faultless.
The sweet selection felt like a dessert board in its own right: a zesty lemon and white chocolate blondie- tangy, squidgy and moreish all-at-once; a shimmering lemon and rosehip jelly shot with just a hint of floral lift which gave us a giggle when encouraged to use the straw to indulge; a fluffy vanilla latte sponge echoing the favourite coffee shop order in cake form; and the standout passionfruit cream tart- bright, sweetly piquant and nestled in the most delicate pastry shell.
This is the kind of tea you linger over and where you become utterly lost in your surroundings, chatting away as if time’ s slowed down entirely. We hadn’ t even noticed that our adjacent pod had been set for another group of guests, who looked equally as surprised as we ventured out of our respective floral abode for a sneak peek around Oad Street’ s recently refurbished and utterly beautiful wedding and events space.
What struck me most was how personal the whole experience felt, from the hand-prepared food to the lovingly decorated pod and the warm service from Tina. There’ s nothing massproduced here, nothing rushed. Just a small team, a beautiful setting and a lot of heart.
Whether you’ re celebrating something special or simply in need of a pause and a treat, the Summer Pod Afternoon Board experience here is a little pocket of happiness – and a very delicious one at that.
Afternoon Boards start at £ 35 per person off peak, based on a minimum of two( off peak) or four( peak) and maximum of 10 guests. Dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergies can be accommodated. Booking with a deposit is essential.
