DEAL FESTIVAL
Deal Festival returns this summer from 3- 13 July- as it has done for over 40 years- to bring the very finest music and culture to Kent under the artistic direction of Luke Styles, with over 55 incredible events.
One highlight will be an evening concert in St George’ s Church given by festival president and renowned soprano Lucy Crowe, which will include songs and arias by Strauss, Gershwin, Handel and Mozart performed with the Fantasia Orchestra after their recent début at the BBC Proms.
As well as the finest classical musicians giving lunchtime and evening concerts, the festival offers world-class opera with the return of Wild Arts performing Donizetti’ s The Elixir of Love in the beautiful St Mary’ s Arts Centre in Sandwich. There’ ll be sublime jazz, including local Deal legend Norma Winstone, up-and-coming young artists, the Maddy Coombs Quartet, and the youthful energy of the Harlem renaissance from the big band of Tomorrow’ s Warriors. The festival is also delighted to welcome award-winning folk duo Spiers and Boden, and, back by popular demand, Chaps Choir, who’ ll raise the roof with their heart-warming ballads and joy-inducing songs.
Alongside music, the festival also includes a series of talks by well-known authors: Laurence Rees talking with Gavin Esler about his book The Nazi Mind; Sarah Gristwood on her book about women’ s lives through their diaries, Secret Voices; and Louise Doughty on her thriller, A Bird in Winter and John Suchet’ s In Search of Beethoven. There are also community singing and musical events, and family events including a dance workshop for young children based on Julia Donaldson’ s much-loved book, The Smeds and the Smoos. Linden Hall Studio and the Astor Theatre will also host a film series on the lives of musicians.
Tickets go on sale on 22 April. Check out the full programme at dealmusicandarts. com / festival.
