Lasting an hour , groups of up to eight can join a guided 5km tour of Canterbury ’ s historic and cultural landmarks such as the cathedral and St . Augustine ’ s Abbey .
After working up a sweat , runners then head to The Foundry Brewpub and Distillery to taste the amazing beers and gins that are made on-site . As much as we love a humble pint , the UK ’ s penchant for a glass of wonderful wine also shows no sign of slowing down , and Kent is home to some of the UK ’ s finest vineyards with the county ’ s practices of brewing , distilling and winemaking longestablished throughout Britain ’ s agricultural history . It ’ s thought that vineyards were brought over to us by the Romans , with legend attributing Julius Caesar ’ s landing on Kentish shores to the introduction of viticulture to the UK .
The expansion of Christianity in the 10th century grew the demand for wine exponentially , since the drink was a vital part of the Eucharist celebration . Monasteries were often responsible for winemaking , continuing this tradition until the 16th-century English Reformation when monarchs were driven away from the authority of the Catholic Church . When landscape gardening and botany came into popularity and fashion around the 18th century , many English country estates began planting vines and making the everpopular drink themselves .
