Ghost Ships brings history to life with an electrifying fusion of explosive hip hop and dynamic kathak dance , original live music and the soul-stirring power of a 150-strong community ensemble . Audiences will embark on an epic journey across centuries , uncovering the dockyard ’ s profound connections to pivotal global events including its critical role in the Battle of Trafalgar , the harrowing slave trade and the abolition movement .
The production shines a spotlight on figures like Olaudah Equiano and John Newton , key champions in the fight against slavery , while also revealing lesser-known stories such as the 20 courageous women who disguised themselves as men to work aboard the dockyard ’ s ships .
Inspired by newly uncovered research from those who worked at the dockyard in its final days , this large-scale , awe-inspiring production delivers a vivid and emotional retelling of the dockyard ’ s past . Performed in a monumental boathouse , where Royal Navy ships were once masterfully constructed , Ghost Ships offers not only a mesmerising reflection on history , but also a thought-provoking commentary on the world we live in today .
