EDUCATION
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
THE IMPORTANCE OF A VALUES-BASED EDUCATION AT

KENT COLLEGE

CANTERBURY

Significant shifts are occurring in our society , moving away from traditional rigid structures and questioning established hierarchies . At Kent College ( KC ), students and staff embrace essential values that allow every individual to thrive . These values include :

Respect : Learning to appreciate the value in others , our environment and , crucially , ourselves .
Acting justly : Working for the good of everyone through service to others .
Ambition : Seeing all the opportunities to learn in your day .
Openness : Embracing quality , diversity and inclusion for the benefit of us all .
Kindness : Being considerate and compassionate towards others , whether this is in person or in digital presence .
Resilience : Building the courage to take risks in learning and also to forgive others .
Humility : Developing the confidence to walk humbly in the world .
Curiosity : Actively enquiring about our world .
Building resilience during school years prepares young people for life ’ s opportunities and setbacks . We encourage students to take on challenges by participating in diverse co-curricular clubs such as expeditions , new sports , public speaking and stage performances . These experiences may initially cause nerves , success or disappointment , but ultimately help students to develop valuable skills to handle pressure and foster determination .
In the modern work environment , curiosity and the ambition to embrace all learning opportunities are crucial . Skills like problemsolving , critical thinking , communication , collaboration , digital literacy and creativity are integrated into our curriculum through inquiry-based learning . Projects encourage collaborative work and actively promote public speaking while students also have exposure to visiting speakers and discover new technologies such as exploring the benefits of AI .
On a practical level , our new Pathways programme in the Sixth Form provides students with career guidance , internships and other opportunities to gain hands-on experience . Most importantly , we want to ensure students know that there are multiple pathways into the world of work and , just like progression through KC , we want to ensure that each student is on the route that most suits them .
Students at KC play an active role in the local community by engaging in serviceoriented activities which help them to understand the importance of acting justly and being considerate towards others . KC builds partnerships with local schools directly and through East Kent Schools Together , providing resources and support to the wider community . From arranging a cricket festival for local junior schools at the Spitfire Ground to hosting Age UK pensioners for afternoon tea and litter picking ; these initiatives demonstrate the school ’ s commitment to fostering kindness , compassion and social responsibility .
We also actively share our facilities with many local groups . Kent Young Carers and the Fifth Trust regularly visit the school farm , while we also support Blean village community residents with a bus service . Working with the Canterbury Choral Youth Choir and through partnership with the Canterbury Festival , we also strive to be a source of cultural enrichment in the arts and to create an inclusive environment for all young people .
