CELEBRATES 150 YEARS
Established in 1874 , Marlborough House , a prep school in Hawkhurst , is marking its 150th anniversary this year . Beginning as a boarding school for boys aged 8 - 13 , Marlborough House became co-educational and opened a pre-prep in the 1980s ; a time of significant change and growth for the school .
Although purpose-built school buildings were added along the way , the core of the school remains the ‘ main building ’ – the same beautiful 18th-century house , adapted for 21st-century schooling . Notable alumni include the Reverend W . Awdry , author of the muchloved Thomas the Tank Engine series , and England cricket captain , David Gower OBE , who returned to the school to open the sports hall in 1999 .
Marlborough House has celebrated its 150th anniversary with a circus extravaganza in the grounds for the pupils and a wonderful anniversary ball for parents and alumni . More anniversary events are planned in the autumn term , including a colour run and a special carol service .
Further celebrations took place when the school was shortlisted in the Small Independent School of the Year category of the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2024 . Marlborough House , which has small class sizes and a family feel , aims to support every child to reach their potential , making this a fitting award recognition .
