HOME + GARDEN
What should our readers consider when it comes to their dream garden design ? Start by asking yourself how you would like to use the space ? This is the question I always start my consultations with . Often , people forget the functionality of a space and focus primarily on the aesthetics and style . Consider whether you want to create an area of sun , shade , or somewhere you would like to have your morning coffee or evening drinks . The space needs to work for you and your lifestyle otherwise you won ’ t utilise the space to its full potential .
What ’ s the most satisfying thing about your job ? Any common challenges you ’ ve had to overcome ? The most satisfying part of my job is watching how a space can completely transform as a result of good design and a strong planting palette . I still think seeing a client ’ s face light up as a result of a transformation is hard to beat . The most common challenge I face is ensuring plants will be resilient to our ever-changing climate ; from flooding to drought , it ’ s harder to guarantee the survival of our common garden plants , so I am introducing species that would usually be associated with the temperatures of southern France .
What trends have you seen emerging in 2024 ? I have noticed that there is a lot more focus on designing with water within the garden . Whether this be through the form of ‘ rain chains ’, which seemed to have their debut at RHS Chelsea this year , or through the incorporation of sustainable drainage systems and drought-tolerant planting . I think people are becoming more aware of water scarcity , but also conscious about the cost of watering , particularly as the summers in the UK become drier and warmer .
