TRAVEL

Nestled between two continents , Istanbul , the vibrant metropolis of Turkey , stands as a testament to its harmonious blend of history and contemporary life . In just 24 hours , I found myself captivated by the city ’ s myriad charms , from its ancient relics to its modern luxuries . This journey promised not only an immersion into the rich cultural tapestry of Istanbul , but also an indulgence in its culinary delights and shopping havens . Welcome to my unforgettable exploration of Istanbul , where every corner of the city reveals a piece of the past and a glimpse into the future .

My Istanbul adventure began in the affluent neighbourhood of Bebek , known for its picturesque views of the Bosphorus . I started my day with a traditional Turkish breakfast at one of Bebek ’ s renowned cafes , the table adorned with a variety of cheeses , olives , fresh tomatoes , cucumbers and , of course , the indispensable simit – a sesame-crusted bread . The highlight was undoubtedly the menemen , a scrumptious Turkish-style scrambled egg dish with tomatoes , peppers and spices . Accompanied by a cup of strong Turkish tea ( çay ), it was the perfect start to my day .
From Bebek , a short journey took me to the heart of Istanbul ’ s fashion district , Nişantaşı . This neighbourhood is synonymous with luxury and sophistication , housing an array of designer showrooms , quaint boutiques and expansive chain brands . I began my shopping spree at Abdi İpekçi Street , the most prestigious shopping avenue in Turkey . Here , international brands like Chanel , Louis Vuitton and Prada sit alongside top Turkish designers such as Vakko and Beymen .
Throughout my stay , Hotel Galata served as my home base . This boutique hotel , nestled in the historic Galata district , seamlessly blends modern amenities with the charm of old Istanbul . With stylish rooms , impeccable service and stunning views of the Golden Horn , Hotel Galata offered the perfect sanctuary to relax and recharge .
I made my way to the Asian side of Istanbul to Bağdat Caddesi , a bustling boulevard that stretches for miles , lined with shops , cafes and restaurants . My first stop was Ecevit Charcuterie , a paradise for food lovers . Here , I savoured an array of Turkish cheeses , from creamy beyaz peynir to tangy tulum . Paired with a selection of olives marinated in herbs and spices , it was a snack that celebrated the rich flavours of Turkish cuisine .
No visit to Bağdat Caddesi is complete without a stop at the Cafer Erol Candy Shop . Established in 1807 , this historic confectionery emporium is renowned for its traditional Turkish sweets . I indulged in a variety of treats , from lokum ( Turkish delight ) in many flavours to almond-filled marzipan and colourful akide candies . The shop itself , with its nostalgic decor and sweet aroma , was a delight to explore .
As I continued my stroll along Bağdat Caddesi , I made my way to Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi for a cup of exquisite Turkish coffee . This historic establishment founded in 1871 is famous for its finely ground coffee beans , and the rich , velvety brew is served in small cups , often accompanied by a piece of Turkish delight . I took a moment to savour the complex flavours and aromas of this traditional beverage ; a staple of Turkish hospitality .
I ended the day back on the European side with dinner at Mürver Restaurant , known for its stunning views of the Bosphorus and its innovative approach to Turkish cuisine . Located on the rooftop of the Novotel Istanbul Bosphorus , Mürver offers an array of delectable dishes cooked over an open flame . I enjoyed specialities like grilled octopus , wood-fired lamb and a variety of fresh mezes . As I dined , the panoramic view of the Bosphorus and the historic peninsula enhanced the dining experience , making it truly unforgettable .
After a magical evening , I returned to the comfort of Hotel Galata . Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the city , and its elegant ambience ensures a restful night ’ s sleep , which prepared me for another day of discovery .
At the start of day two , I experienced the unique charm of Istanbul from the water with a boat transfer to Galataport . This newly developed area redefines the historic port , seamlessly blending the old with the new . Galataport features the world ’ s first underground cruise terminal , allowing visitors to disembark directly into the heart of the city .
At Galataport , I immersed myself in a shopping experience like no other at The Post Office Fashion Galleria . This chic shopping destination houses over 70 exclusive boutique stores , showcasing renowned fashion , design , delicacies and jewellery artisans . As I wandered through the galleria , I discovered a curated selection of high-end Turkish and international brands , offering everything from bespoke fashion pieces to unique homeware .
Galataport is not just a shopping haven ; it ’ s also a hub for arts and culture . I spent my evening exploring the various museums and art spaces within the development . The Istanbul Modern , Turkey ’ s first museum of modern and contemporary art , is a must-visit . Its extensive collection includes works by prominent Turkish artists as well as international pieces , and the museum ’ s sleek , modern architecture is a striking contrast to its historic surroundings , offering a visual feast for art lovers .
As night approached a dining experience at Frankie Restaurant was on the cards . Located in the heart of Nişantaşı , it ’ s known for its stylish ambience and live music , and offers a menu that blends Turkish and international cuisine . I savoured dishes
