RESTAURANTS & SMALLHOLDINGS
The Goods Shed , Canterbury If you ask the locals to think of a sustainable business , we guarantee that at least 90 % of them will mention The Goods Shed . Located near Westgate in Canterbury city centre , The Goods Shed - a restaurant , farmers ’ market and food hall - goes above and beyond in its commitment to sustainability .
Occupying a Victorian building previously used as an old railway and coal store , its beautiful wooden beams and red bricks are still very much intact and The Goods Shed provides a unique place to buy a range of local fruit and veg , meat , fish , cheese , wine and artisan goods .
“ We want to keep nurturing the local economy , keeping our local farmers and abattoirs firmly in business .”

The Smallholding , Kilndown Situated on one acre of a biodiverse farm , these Michelin Green Star winners are constantly reinventing the wheel when it comes to self-sufficiency and sustainability from growing their own fruit and veg , and raising their own chickens , ducks and rarebreed pigs to updating their tasting menu each month to seamlessly complement their seasonal , foraged produce .
“ Growing our own produce is the most important part of what we do - managing our soil and starting to develop flavour in our food from the ground up ,” says Will Devlin , chef / owner . “ Our no-dig method is the most natural and sustainable way of producing food .”

Here in Kent , we are blessed with some of the most productive agricultural land in the UK , and although we have an abundance of forward-thinking , eco-conscious producers , suppliers and businesses across the county , there is still a long way to go to make the food and drink industry as sustainable as possible .
The consequences of unsustainable farming and food production are too severe to even risk contemplating . We all have a part to play both as consumers and producers to demand more sustainable practices when it comes to the food and drink we consume . Sustainable production not only benefits biodiversity , our carbon footprint and has a direct impact on climate change , but it is evident that it provides healthier , better quality and more delicious food and drink for us to enjoy .
