In this part of the world we ’ re incredibly fortunate to have an abundance of scenic trails for trekking . From coastal strolls offering sea views to woodland walks in secluded forests , there ’ s a path to suit everyone . May is national walking month , so what better reason to dust off those walking boots that haven ’ t seen the light of day since lockdown ?
If your ambition this month is to hit the recommended 10K steps per day , then you might have realised that this is easier said than done ; 10,000 steps equates to around five miles or eight kilometres , which can feel like a mean feat when you ’ re busy doing the everyday life thing .
So , to make things easier , we ’ ve rounded up a selection of the best ways to hit your 10K this May . Plus , many of the routes have pit stops for a refreshing glass of wine or a bite to eat , so if you ’ re going to try and hit that step goal , at least you can do it safely knowing you ’ ll be rewarded for your efforts …
FOR DOG WALKERS : Betteshanger Country Park Near to Deal and set within 250 acres , this former spoil tip from one of the largest collieries in Kent is now home to a captivating country park . There ’ s over three miles of tracks and trails to explore , and by the time you ’ ve discovered all the different activities and pathways on offer , you ’ ll have clocked up your 10,000 steps in no time .
Owing to its location and traffic-free surrounds , Betteshanger is ideal for dog walkers , whose four-legged friends will love exploring the miles of park and woodland pathways . Dogs do need to be kept on leads , but there ’ s plenty of space to enjoy . Make sure you head to the top of the park where you ’ ll get panoramic views towards Sandwich , or stroll past the picturesque blue lake , where you ’ ll spot countless dragonflies skipping over its surface during the summer months .
FOR FAMILIES : Bedgebury Pinetum Bedgebury National Pinetum is home to the largest conifer collection in the world and a visit to this 350-acre Wealden woodland is a must for any nature lover , but it ’ s especially good for families who want to mix walking with other activities .
Not only will you be able to hit your 10,000 steps with ease thanks to the Pinetum pathways and the surrounding Bedgebury forest , there ’ s plenty to keep little ones occupied too . Find The Gruffalo and his friends hiding in the deep , dark wood , head for a treetop adventure at Go Ape , and run , jump and climb at a number of play areas around the pinetum . When you ’ re done walking , rest your weary feet in the onsite cafe and grab a bite to eat , or visit the nearby The Vineyard at Lamberhurst which is part of the Elite Pubs group and is ideal for family dining and offers stunning views across the vines and beyond .
