LIFE IN KENT IS

Sweet

by VISIT KENT ’ S KATY TOWSE

Drawing the crowds all over Kent , our top five sweet treats are not only delicious , but they also showcase some of the very best independent makers and bakers that the county has to offer .

From cafés to markets and bakeries , let ’ s delve into sugar heaven and discover which Kentish treats have got the locals queuing and the tourists flocking …
Cookies . With Dips . The premise is oh-so simple , but the execution at Dunk Cookies ( dunkcookies . co . uk ) is just oh-so-good . Based in Whitstable and available at a variety of Kent food markets , this great British baking company is family-run and oozing with quality . There are seasonal bakes , unique themed boxes and limitededition releases , but it ’ s the OG vanilla cookies with dips that have our mouths watering – slowly dunk your ( perfectly soft and chewy ) cookies into decadently flavoured dips for the ultimate scoop of melt-in-the-mouth sweetness .
From the minute it opened , Hythe high street ’ s newest cafe , Florence ’ s Artisan Bakery (@ florencesartisanbakery ) has had queues out of the door with locals waiting in line at the crack of dawn for their weekend pastry and coffee fix . With freshly baked bread , light , buttery croissants , unique cruffin combinations and exquisite patisserie Danish - all handmade in-house – you ’ ll want to return again and again to try everything on the menu . We recommend you grab a selection of goodies , along with a coffee of course , and stroll to the nearby canal to live out a perfect Sunday set up .
Just along the coast in Deal , Bygga Bo (@ byggabo ) is an award-winning Scandinavian bakery that supplies Kent ’ s cafés and markets with their now-famous Swedish buns . From classic cinnamon to sweet vanilla , savoury cardamom , heavenly pistachio and chocolate , the warm buns are somehow both crispy and squishy , and they totally live up to the hype . Originally only available at their design shop and café in Walthamstow , you can now get your hands on one at Deal Market on Saturday mornings , or from a range of Kent cafés .
Oh we do like to be beside the seaside ! Herbert ’ s (@ herbertsfolkestone ) famous Gypsy Tart ice cream is an iconic Kentish frozen treat . Based on the classic Gypsy
Tart dessert , which originated in Kent , this velvety ice cream is a fusion of creamy , luxurious sweetness and rich , syrupy caramel . With tubs available from longstanding ice cream parlour Herbert ’ s , in Folkestone ’ s buzzing harbour , this popular local delicacy is most definitely a local summer staple .
Speaking of staples , we couldn ’ t forget the Kent artisanal bakery stores under the ‘ Staple ’ umbrella in our recommendations . Now with locations in Broadstairs , Westgate on Sea , Ramsgate and Margate , Staple ( www . staplestores . co . uk ) uses traditional techniques and local ingredients to bake showstopper cinnamon cruffins , elegant crème patissiere pastries and succulent , flaky sausage rolls that have the people of East Kent lining the streets .
Is your mouth watering yet ? Have we tempted you ? I think a snack pilgrimage might be in order … go on , you deserve a treat !
