THE BREDGAR & WORMSHILL LIGHT RAILWAY
Affectionately known amongst locals as Kent ’ s best kept secret , The Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway has in fact been open to the public since 1975 . The beautiful , full-sized steam railway nestled near Sittingbourne in the heart of the bucolic Kent Downs offers a unique day out for families and enthusiasts alike with plenty to do and see .
Privately owned , the railway started as a hobby that ‘ got out of hand ’. The original owner , Bill Best Sr . ( along with his brother and some friends ), bought a small diesel locomotive to restore , quickly followed by their first steam engine and some reclaimed track was then laid to create the line . Soon , they began to open to the public on the first Sunday of every month throughout the summer to showcase the restoration works carried out by the volunteers .
Some 50 years on , the railway remains in the family and continues to open for the enjoyment of steam and transport fans .
Today ’ s collection includes steam and diesel locomotives , vintage vehicles and engines of interest , attracting visiting exhibitors throughout the year . The annual events calendar includes a classic car day , a 1940 ’ s steam day , a model railway exhibition and Santa Specials amongst many other highlights .
Although the steam event days are held monthly , the railway ’ s charming Tea Room is open Wednesday to Sunday weekly , serving breakfasts , lunches and fabulous cakes . During the school holidays and every Wednesday in term time , Bredgar Railway runs a pay-per-ride diesel service , which is ideal for train fans looking for a shorter visit as the museum and other attractions are only open on steam event days .
