KENT WOMEN IN BUSINESS :
TANYA ALBIN
CLINIC OWNER AND ADVANCED NURSE PRACTITIONER AT THE DERMA CLINIC KENT
Tell us a little bit about you and your journey into the aesthetics industry ? I ’ ve been in the wonderful world of aesthetics for 13 years now . Having started my nursing career as a theatre nurse , I remember seeing an article on training in aesthetic medicine and thinking how interested in it I immediately became . I ’ ve always loved skincare ever since I was a child , so I didn ’ t know back then but now it makes perfect sense as to why I was attracted to the industry .
I booked my introduction to aesthetics courses and went from there , starting off small , with a flip-up treatment couch and a handful of friends and family that trusted me enough to carry out treatments on them to gain experience and those all important before and afters .
I never really anticipated how much my venture would grow and in February of 2023 I handed in my notice in my NHS role to focus solely on my growing aesthetics business . We now have a dedicated CQC registered clinic , open five days a week , with two nurses , front of house support and over 100 five-star Google reviews .
When did you start the business and what was your driving force ? I started the business as a sole trader back in 2011 ; I just knew I wanted to do something completely different with my nursing degree . I saw an advert for training , had a brief discussion about potential profit margins and thought why not , what ’ s to lose !
What sets you apart from the rest ? I really feel very strongly about the lack of regulation that is currently in the aesthetics industry . Due to this , it is my absolute passion to ensure safety , education and a more ethical approach to the industry is always our driving force . We gained our CQC registration last year that makes sure we are safe , well led , effective and caring . This is the same regulation that hospitals , GP surgeries and clinics are governed by . While this is not compulsory in aesthetics , it was an absolute must for me to ensure we stand apart from the rest – with our patients ’/ clients ’ best interests at the forefront of everything we do .
What are you most proud of and what ’ s your biggest achievement ? Biggest achievement as a clinic is gaining a good rating for our CQC inspection . Biggest personal achievement was being shortlisted for The Safety in Beauty Awards Best Aesthetics Nurse 2023 - I was truly blown away by this !
If you could give one piece of advice to women in business , what would it be ? Never ever stop . Keep going , keep growing , take each day at a time and learn and grow from any failures because absolutely nothing worth having comes easy and when you get there - wherever that may be - it makes all the tears , hard work and sleepless nights worth it . You literally can do anything you set your mind to .
