BEHIND THE BAKES OF CHURCHILL ’ S CAKES
The story behind Sir Winston Churchill ’ s most incredible birthday cakes will be depicted in a new photography display opening in the gardens of Chartwell this January .
Winston ’ s Spectacular Cakes will kick off Churchill ’ s 150th birthday year with a series of hand-selected archive photographs showcasing some of the most spectacular birthday bakes Churchill received in his lifetime .
A baking competition inspired by Churchill ’ s cakes will officially launch the new display . Categories including ‘ Winston ’ s New Fruity Favourite ’ - in homage to Churchill ’ s favourite cake baked by his cook , Mrs Georgina Landemare - will be judged by Richard Burr , former finalist of The Great British Bake Off .
Katherine Carter , Chartwell ’ s curator , says : “ Our new outdoor display shows the wonderful array of cakes inspired by Churchill ’ s interests and achievements . They were a forerunner to our love of extravagant and themed bakes today . We ’ re delighted that Richard Burr , baking extraordinaire and former contestant of The Great British Bake Off , is helping us to launch the display .”
Winston ’ s Spectacular Cakes will be on display from 13 January to 25 February 2024 , 10am to 4pm , at Chartwell and is included with normal admission .
PRESTIGIOUS WEDDING AWARD FOR BRADBOURNE HOUSE
Bradbourne House , the luxury wedding venue in East Malling , has clinched the coveted title of Heritage Wedding Venue of the Year at the Kent Wedding Awards .
Dating back to 1590 and recognised as a Grade I listed Queen Anne Country House , Bradbourne House earned this prestigious accolade in acknowledgement of its rich heritage . The house , originally constructed between 1712 and 1715 , underwent significant transformations from its Tudor origins in the late 1500s , with some of the original features still preserved in its kitchens .
The house occasionally offers guided tours to the public and has become a popular wedding venue amongst the 7,000 couples annually who choose The Garden of England as their destination .
Renowned for its dining offerings , Bradbourne House ’ s catering team , made up of dedicated professionals from leading hospitality business BaxterStorey , was honoured for its culinary excellence , which prioritises local and sustainable ingredients and bespoke menu options .

PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS DESIGN NATURE-FRIENDLY SHOW HOME GARDENS
Taylor Wimpey South East has teamed up with Deal Parochial C . E . P . School and Reculver Primary School to create sustainable gardens at its Wellington Paddocks development in Deal and its St Augustine ’ s Place development in Herne Bay .
The housebuilder challenged pupils to design a nature friendly and an environmentally friendly garden respectively for the new show homes .
The winning entry for Deal , from Riley Collins aged 10 , included several sustainable features including bird boxes , flowers , bushes and shrubs , which will offer a variety of habitats for local wildlife and encourage biodiversity , while Maisie Seymour , aged seven , won the entry for the Herne Bay garden with features including a bird box and bug hotel , which will offer habitats for local wildlife .
Jason Stokes , sales and marketing director at Taylor Wimpey South East , says : “ We are aware of the impact the housebuilding industry can have on sustainability , which is why we are committed to encouraging sustainable solutions across our developments .
“ We were so pleased to welcome Riley to Wellington Paddocks to unveil the show home garden and Maisie to the show home at St Augustine ’ s Place and we would like to thank all the pupils at both schools who took part in our competitions to design the gardens .”
