Since its inception in 1898 , when Agnes Mercy Vowles and her husband Frank Wellington opened their clothing shop on Bexley Road , Wellingtons has remained an enduring fixture on the local high street .
Over the years , their journey has seen them evolve . During WW2 , they provided furniture rationing coupons , and in the post-war era , ventured into the world of televisions and furniture .
In 1955 , they made a pivotal shift towards electronics , setting the stage for a remarkable journey .
Fast forward to today and Wellingtons stands as the second oldest family business in Kent ; a testament to their enduring commitment to the community .
As they celebrate 125 years on the high street this November , they are thrilled to invite you to a week of exciting events . From captivating cooking demos to kitchen extravaganzas and delightful prosecco and canapés evenings , there ’ s something for everyone .

NEW APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME FOR CANTERBURY CABINET AND FURNITURE COMPANY
Herringbone , the Canterbury-based bespoke cabinet and furniture maker , has announced that the company is starting an apprenticeship programme to help train the next generation of joiners , sprayers , installers , CNC machinists , project managers and designers .
As part of their ethos , the family run business prides themselves on working with their employees from a young age and seeing them flourish in their private lives as well as working their way up in the company . In an industry where apprenticeships are hard to come by or expensive to get into , Herringbone offers paid programmes with all courses running for two years , with training and assessments on-site at their workshop in Canterbury .

CHARITY SUPER . MKT OPENS FIRST KENT STORE AT BLUEWATER
Charity Super . Mkt , the ‘ department store for second-hand style ’ launched earlier this year by Maria Chenoweth and Wayne Hemingway , has officially opened at Bluewater .
Responding to the growing popularity of pre-loved shopping and creating a unique retail experience for guests looking for quality , affordable products , the store joins a host of new openings at Bluewater including the world ’ s first Sidemen clothing store , a new Dyson Demo store and an enhanced Uniqlo shop , meanwhile , Hangloose Adventure Bluewater opened ‘ Skytrek ’, a 350-metre high ropes experience .
The Charity Super . Mkt concept has proved hugely popular with shoppers thanks to its curated collections of second-hand fashion . To date , 101,659 items of clothing have been snapped up , generating sales of more than £ 1m for charities and creating a much-needed additional income stream for charities including Shelter , Cancer Research , Age UK and TRAID .

Maidstone Museum is calling on local artists aged 25 and under to pick up their pens , pencils and paintbrushes for the chance to win up to £ 250 in the Maidstone Young Artist Award 2024 .
Young people in the age categories 14 years and under , and 15 - 25 based
2022 ENTRY BY MARIA SIMONOVA , SPIRITUS INVICTUS in South East England are invited to submit a piece of artwork with the theme ‘ Metamorphosis ( Changes )’ before the 24 November deadline . Winning entrants will not only receive a cash prize , but will also see their work displayed at the temporary exhibition galleries at the county town ’ s museum . The winner of the 15 - 25 years ’ category will also be invited to sit on the judging panel for the 2026 awards .
Maidstone Borough Council lead member for leisure and arts , Cllr Claudine Russell comments : “ Encouraging young artists and giving them a platform to showcase their work is so important for supporting the stars of the future and promoting a thriving arts culture .
“ This Maidstone Young Artist Award 2024 is a fantastic opportunity for creative young people to really show what they can do and share their gift more widely . We want to avoid any amazing talent slipping through the net which is why we ’ re helping to remove any barriers to entry by offering funding towards the entry fee and / or materials for those who need it .
“ We ’ ve seen some stunning entries in the past and cannot wait to see what this year ’ s has in store .”
