Centring around the thriving resorts of Brighton and Eastbourne , Kent ’ s neighbour East Sussex is celebrated for its eclectic mixture of thriving towns , stunning countryside and breathtaking coastline . An area still steeped in all the magic and folklore of the ancient inhabitants that left marks on the landscape and stories in the air , East Sussex , and most notably Brighton & Hove , has continued to attract freespirited , open-minded creatives that continue to positively influence the area . As a result , there ’ s plenty of exciting things to do and places to visit that blend history , art , culture and landscape into one . From the ancient chalk hillside carving of The Long Man of Wilmington ( possibly dating as far back as the Neolithic period ) to the annual Lewes Bonfire Night , tradition and festivity are always upheld here and delivered with an air of nuanced liberalism .
Whether it be the fifth of November or not , East Sussex ’ s county town of Lewes is well worth a visit , especially for those looking to delve into the history of the area . A historic settlement that occupies a strategically important point where the River Ouse is crossed by an ancient east-to-west land route , much of the town ’ s street plan dates from Saxon times . Today , visitors can relive history by visiting Lewes Castle & Barbican House Museum , where relics found in the area from prehistoric times through to the Middle Ages are on display . There are also splendid views over the town to anyone climbing to the roof of the keep . More historical attractions unfold in Lewes in the form of Anne of Cleves House , a Wealden hall house that formed part of Henry VIII ’ s divorce settlement , now open to the public and furnished in 17th - 18th century fashion , as well as The Martyrs Memorial and The Priory of St Pancras .
