THE MARGATE SCHOOL : A CREATIVE APPROACH TO CREATIVE EDUCATION
The Margate School ( TMS ) is a diverse creative community of artists , makers , students , academics and volunteers located in the vibrant coastal town of Margate , Kent .
Founded in 2018 by Uwe Derksen ( formerly University of the Creative Arts , British Design Innovation , and South East Design Forum ) the concept of TMS was simple and straightforward : to develop a creative and innovative not-forprofit provision , with technical facilities and support that would help to build up a self-sufficient , collaborative and supportive learning community in and for Margate .
Part-funded from a successful application to the Coastal Community Fund ( CCF ), TMS took up residence in the town ’ s iconic former Woolworths building and in doing so established ‘ a revolutionary and alternative , independent not-for-profit postgraduate , liberal-arts school for the 21st century ’.
Proud of its ethos of a ‘ a modern art school by the people , for the people ’, The Margate School ’ s investment into the building has created 53 new studio spaces , alongside a FabLab ( Fabrication Laboratory ) and MakerSpace with state-of-the-art facilities , two darkrooms , a sound auditorium , and a screening and gallery space . Today , it offers affordable postgraduate arts courses for 16 alumni students , has created 9 internal staff jobs , works with 14 tutors from top universities such as UCA , Central St Martins and Goldsmiths , manages 24 fellowships , and operates an inclusive hub for the community at large .
In only a short space of time TMS has gained a solid reputation within the community ; for its supportive
and caring environment where creativity is developed and personal well-being is nurtured .
An opportunity to study at The Margate School offers its members more than just joining a student body , it creates a safe space for creative participation from people of all ages , across all social and economic backgrounds .

THE BIG DONATE
The BIG Donate is a week of easy giving , raising funds and awareness for registered charity Embracing Arts ( Eng & Wales 1162812 ). The BIG Donate week runs 25 - 29 September 2023 .
Embracing Arts , based in Faversham , provides shows , theatre-based workshops and parties for children with additional and complex needs and those with lifelimiting illness . They also take their specially designed services into SEND schools and children ’ s hospices to reach children who are excluded from arts in its traditional form because of their access needs and disabilities .
The BIG Donate works on the premise that most people generally want to do something to support charities , but often don ’ t have the time , energy or spare funds to join a large , organised event . The BIG Donate enables them to raise money for Embracing Arts by making simple adjustments to their everyday lives : like making coffee at home for a week and donating their daily cappuccino spend , or donating the cost of a service they offer . There is also the option to sell something they own or make and donate the proceeds .
The concept is simply just SERVICE , SWAP and SELL to raise funds , “ Whatever you choose to do : DONATE !!!”
