CHURCHILL PAINTING AT HEVER CASTLE
FOR HISTORY BUFFS
Canterbury Roman Museum
Explore Canterbury ’ s history around the remains of an original Roman townhouse and Scheduled Ancient Monument ; one of the UK ’ s only remaining in-situ Roman pavement mosaics . This really is ancient art at its finest . When workmen , digging trenches for a new drainage system , reached eight feet below street level they unwittingly unearthed a beautifully preserved Roman floor mosaic . Fast forward to the aftermath of the Second World War , when excavations began under the cellars of shops destroyed by bombing , and another startling discovery was made . Archaeologists had just revealed an under-floor heating system , wall paintings and a dazzling mosaic corridor . The site was no longer an isolated floor mosaic , but the remains of a very large , and very costly , Roman townhouse .
Lullingstone Roman Villa
Another Kentish treasure that showcases the best of Roman art and architecture . The villa was begun in about AD 100 , and developed to suit the tastes and beliefs of successive wealthy owners , reaching its peak of luxury in the mid-fourth century . Visitors to the villa today can still view the spectacular mosaics and prints of the rare wall paintings , a heated bath-suite and a ‘ house-church ’. A specially commissioned light show brings the villa to life , and galleries display Lullingstone ’ s fascinating collection of Roman artefacts .
Churchill ’ s Studio at Chartwell
The studio at Churchill ’ s family home holds the largest collection of Winston Churchill ' s paintings . With his paints still laid out and a canvas waiting for completion , it is displayed to look like he has just stepped out to the garden for a moment . The studio is teeming with Churchill canvasses , most unframed and in various stages of completion .
Established as a place for painting in the 1930s and expanded in the 1950s , the studio became a favourite refuge for Churchill . When he was not outdoors , he was in the studio . Inside the studio you ' ll find recognisable views from Chartwell , but also landscapes Churchill worked on during his travels in Europe , Africa and North America . There is also
Churchill ' s only attempt at sculpture to be seen . A painting from the collection can also be found at Hever Castle , which is depicted in the painting itself .
