AS KENT IS ABUNDANT IN NATURAL BEAUTY AND WONDER , IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT MUCH OF THE HISTORY OF KENT HAS BEEN HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY ART , AND IN TURN ART HAS INFLUENCED THE SHAPING OF KENT , ITS PLACES , PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES .

The Beaney , Canterbury
Canterbury ’ s Museum , Art Gallery , Library and Visitor Information Centre situated in the heart of the historic city centre . Exhibitions currently include the works of legendary Kent creators Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate . A temporary gallery space celebrates the work by this award-winning Smallfilms duo . See old favourites such as Bagpuss , Clangers , Noggin the Nog and Ivor the Engine alongside brand new items on display . Other exhibitions include Colour and Camouflage , which showcases a selection of animals , birds , butterflies , rocks and minerals from the natural world arranged in perfect rainbowcolour order , and People and Places , an exceptional collection of paintings and objects highlighting notable people and places in the Canterbury area . From legendary Baroque court painter Anthony Van Dyke to contemporary pop artist David Hockney , this juxtaposed collection of artwork spans an impressive 500 years .
The Garden Room is dedicated to the work of prominent Canterbury-born artist Thomas Sidney Cooper ; The Front Room is a contemporary gallery room where local artists and groups showcase their work ; Materials and Masters examines raw materials in detail , from rocks in the earth to the life on its surface exploring the journey at the hands of the artists who transform those materials into art ; the Special Exhibitions Room showcases works on national and international loan spanning both historical and contemporary art and running alongside associated events and activities for all ages . Another favourite collection is The Study , which houses its own Cabinet of Curiosities , a collection of interesting and varied objects from the late 18th century onwards , including oddities such as a two-headed shark , four-legged duckling and a narwhal tusk .
