What were the common mistakes that you managed to avoid ?
Lack of detailed planning can lead to mistakes and confusion throughout the project . Software has come a long way and it ’ s now much easier to visualise from a 3D drawing what the space will look and feel like . We now find with a series of drawings and mood boards that everyone , from the client to the tradespeople , knows what the final result is and anything that isn ’ t in line with that can be addressed at the planning stage .
Did anything go wrong ?
You always need to remain adaptable . However much you plan there will always be surprises , particularly when working on an older building . Projects have to evolve to reflect what you uncover , like rotten floors or , as is often the case in the last couple of years , difficulty with the availability of particular building materials or products . Staying positive , being flexible , and having a good working relationship with tradespeople on site is paramount to the success of a project .
Did the property require any bespoke elements ?
The client wanted the living room to be the place where everyone gathered to watch TV in a lovely elegant room and therefore wanted a nice home for his very large television . We designed and specified a large wall of bespoke cabinetry to house the television and all the kit that goes with it while combining a beautiful shelved and lit display area . This was then built by the cabinet maker and we had it painted in the same colour as the wall to make it feel like an integral part of the room .
The rooms in this phase of the project were large and we commissioned very large beautiful bespoke rugs for all three rooms in colours taken from the palette of colour we created early in the process . Rugs are incredibly important to create softness , sound dampening and zoning in a room and these rugs were designed specifically so that all the furniture fitted perfectly on to them defining the space beautifully .
One of our close suppliers , Bo Concept in Canterbury , were very helpful with providing bespoke and correctly sized furniture .
What are you most proud of ?
We are most proud of the fact that the client loves the rooms ! That ’ s what it is all about at the end of the day . These were the rooms they had dreamed of when we first met but just didn ’ t know how to achieve them . We managed to take everything out of their heads and use our experience to translate it into a beautiful series of rooms . That makes us very happy and proud .
What are your hints and tips for those looking to embark on a property renovation project ?
A property renovation project is one of the most exciting things you will do in your life . Don ’ t be afraid of it , but don ’ t underestimate how much of your life it will take up . There are literally thousands of decisions to make and it can seem overwhelming at times . Start planning as early as you possibly can and don ’ t be afraid to get a professional to help you . Working with an interior designer doesn ’ t have to be expensive , in fact , in the long run it will often save you money as a good designer will lead you through the process and help avoid confusion and mistakes saving time and therefore money . Most importantly , enjoy it !
