THE FAMILY RUN CHOCOLATIER CREATING ‘ DEVILISHLY MOREISH ’ HANDMADE VEGAN CHOCOLATES .
Boasting a clutch of awards recognising everything from Great Taste to sustainability , Goudhurst-based vegan chocolate inventors , Goupie , was originally the result of a cherished and coveted family recipe created by the mother and grandmother of founders Janet and Grace Simpson , who are also mother and daughter . “ Grandma Shirley ' s original recipe can still be found in her hand-written cookbook , though it ' s carefully locked away at Goupie HQ ,” founder Janet tells us . This is the recipe that saw the Noble / Simpson family through 50 years of in-home Goupie making before it hit the shelves for the public to enjoy . From those humble beginnings , Goupie has now grown into a functioning business , with a number of employees , a clear vision , bespoke factory unit and a huge variety of customers including the National Trust and Liberty ' s of London .
“ I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to work with my mum . Not many people get to spend this much time with their parents after they leave the family home ! It ’ s particularly special to be able to build something with her that will be a family legacy ; starting with my grandma ’ s recipe which has turned into our little business that continues to grow and evolve . I think we ’ re both looking forward to seeing how far we can take that .” Grace tells us .
Together , Janet and Grace came up with the Goupie tagline used on packaging today : “ a devilishly moreish chewy chocolate confection with a hint of crunch .” Taking locally sourced to the next level , Goupie uses Kentish ingredients in their chocolate , including lavender from the Hop Shop in Faversham , coffee from Cafe Hormozi in Sittingbourne , cider from Biddenden Vineyards and the salt flakes from Maldon .
