Who : Informal fine dining steak restaurant by resident Kentish foodies Adam and Sam Ready , led by GM / chef Lexi Brown and head chef Darryl Quested .
Where : Set in Canterbury ’ s former electric theatre , dating back to 1911 , on St Peter ’ s Street in the heart of the city , just yards from The Marlowe Theatre , Westgate Towers and Fremlin Walk .
Concept & Dining Room : Debut restaurant for the pair , who , having dined in some of the county and indeed the globe ’ s most acclaimed restaurants , wanted to bring London-style social dining to Kent ’ s most iconic city ; underpinned with a staunch commitment to local produce , wine and spirits , and the best global cuts of beef .
In a nutshell , herd . which opened in June 2022 , offers great steak ; think World Steak Award winners , wagyu , prussian black ( diamond grade ) and Irish grass-fed cuts , all cooked on open flames ; great wine , from both local and new world acclaimed vineyards ; great cocktails , from a curated list of signature serves , all named in honour of the characters that have bought the building to life over the last century ; and a great time . Expect attentive friendly service and a laid-back yet sophisticated vibe , regardless of whether you are indulging in crafted cocktails in the secluded hide lounge , or dining in sophisticated style in the opulent green and gold dining room , which offers the perfect date or celebratory setting , framed by cosy banquette seating , a primely positioned chef ’ s table , original double-height ceilings and a threemetre high restored window .
Menu Must Haves : Aside from any of the choice cuts of steak or daily special steak sharer boards , don ’ t overlook the fresh market fish of the day , oysters , the short rib croquettes , and herd .’ s legendary sticky toffee pudding . The signature cocktail menu is a showcase of artisan spirits and flavour ; the ‘ resting b * tchface ’, herd .’ s take on an amaretto sour , and the flaming marshmallow adjourned ‘ campfire ’ are sure-fire hits .
