Unfortunately , although the preservatives may have been overcome and tomato sauce is definitely now a whole lot of tomato , ketchup is still loaded with refined sugar providing an astonishing one teaspoon of sugar per one tablespoon of product , and considering most people ( in particular kids ) use closer to two to four tablespoons , it really does start to add up . Maybe it ’ s time to start considering your own homemade , and honestly healthier alternatives . Forget hours of slaving over a hot stove ; creating a tasty , sugar-reduced ketchup can be achieved in just 30 minutes and you ’ ll feel so good for it afterwards .
This homemade recipe will be sure to satisfy the whole family ' s ketchup cravings ; it ’ s the same texture , with a much fresher , inviting taste and you won ’ t be worried when the kids go in for their third helping . You could even use your own home-grown tomatoes , or failing that buy local ; the sauce will instantly taste 100 % better and you ’ ll have loads of fun in the process . Homemade Tomato Sauce www . thepetitecook . com / easy-homemade-ketchup Ingredients :
• 300g double-concentrate tomato paste , organic if possible
• 80g maple syrup
• 60ml white vinegar , or apple cider vinegar
• 60ml water
• 2 tsp onion powder
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp sea salt
• 1 tsp cinnamon powder
• 1 tsp black pepper powder
• Grated nutmeg and chilli powder to taste , optional
Method :
1 . Place all ingredients in a powerful blender and blend until combined and you reach a smooth texture .
2 . Add a pinch of nutmeg and chilli powder at the end for a spicy kick , or leave the ketchup plain .
3 . Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks .
Mushroom Ketchup The Corner House , Canterbury
Try something new with this alternative ketchup , trust us , it ’ s good ! Serve with a delicious piece of steak , or it ’ s also great with sausages .
Ingredients :
• 1kg button mushrooms , sliced
• 1 x 25g tin of salted anchovies
• 175g sugar
• 200ml white wine vinegar
• 1 / 4 tsp flaked chilli
• 1 / 2 litre of water
• 250ml rapeseed oil
• Salt and pepper
Method : 1 . In a large pot fry the sliced mushrooms in a little oil .
2 . Once cooked , add the anchovies , sugar , white wine , vinegar and chilli and cook for ten minutes .
3 . Place in a blender and add the oil and water gradually until it becomes the consistency of ketchup .
4 . Spoon the ketchup into sterilised bottles or jars , seal tightly and store in the fridge .
