Crossing the elevated threshold of the country-style pub nestled in the heart of Burham , a tiny village just five miles away from the more lively Maidstone and beautiful Rochester , the buzz of their latest fanfare - yet another Taste of Kent Dining Pub of the Year award - was evident across the team , not least from head chef Ray Clear who bounded from the kitchen to welcome us , happily explaining the choice cuts he had on offer for the evening as we were led to our table .
For those of you that have not yet had the pleasure of dining , which included on this occasion iK ’ s Siân and Karlene , the ethos here is developed first and foremost from owner Simon ’ s background in butchery - hence the name . A highly skilled butcher turned publican / restaurateur , Simon along with wife Joanne recognised the opportunity to fulfil their vision of a welcoming country-style pub with a menu that harnesses the choicest cuts of meats , top notch ingredients , real ales and artisan spirits , all underpinned by a friendly welcome and effortless service .
At the front you have the traditional village boozer feel ; happy dogs napping underfoot , but make your way towards the rear of the building and you ’ ll find a cosy and compact dining room offering views out across the rolling fields beyond , as well as glimpses of the steak fridge showcasing the best aged and hung beef on offer that day .
