“ Care is a great career ,” says former infantry officer as he leads opening of new Swanley care home
THE MANAGER OF A NEW CARE HOME OPENING IN SWANLEY IS ENCOURAGING PEOPLE WHO ’ VE NEVER WORKED IN CARE TO CONSIDER TAKING UP THE PROFESSION .
Harry Garston , a former infantry officer with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers , also ran an electrical engineering business with his family before moving into the care industry , initially as an admissions officer . Now 35 , he ’ ll be leading the team at Birchwood Heights , a new luxury care home that recently opened on Hilda May Avenue in the town .
The purpose-built care home provides all-inclusive residential , nursing , memory and respite care for up to 77 residents . It will be the latest addition to Oakland Care ’ s portfolio which includes three homes on the Essex / London border , one in Oxfordshire and two on the East Sussex coast .
“ I came into the care profession almost by accident but it didn ’ t take long for me to fall for the job and the residents I worked for ,” said Harry . “ Previous experience isn ’ t necessary for roles like care assistants – we can provide full training - but what you can ’ t teach is care and compassion . People might have cared for a relative , brought up children or just have a caring nature . I want to hear from people with a range of backgrounds and skills .”
The home is currently under construction but once complete it will offer facilities including a cinema room , hair and beauty salon , a barber ’ s , airconditioned lounges , a dedicated consulting room for health appointments and garden areas .
Initially , at least 30 new roles will be created , reaching more than 100 when the home is fully occupied . Birchwood Court will also support apprenticeships and work placements .
“ I think the last couple of years have thrown a light on the amazing work care staff do ,” added Harry . “ While it can be hard work , the rewards are endless . It ’ s never just a job ; the care sector gives you great opportunities to develop a career and I ’ m a good example of that .”
