PLAN AHEAD
Planning a gallery wall isn ’ t always essential , but it is advised . There aren ’ t any strict rules to creating a home gallery , but it is a good idea to pick an overarching theme to get you started . Perhaps you live by the sea and are aiming for a coastal vibe , or maybe you have an interest in vintage prints , love botanical or are a fanatic collector ; a gallery wall is a blank canvas for you to get creative and inject a spot of personality and interest into a space – so make sure to have fun with it !
Start by choosing the wall where your art gallery will feature and think about how you imagine the finished installment looking . This should help with the ‘ choosing ’ process and give you an idea of scale ; how big can you go ? Think about colours and how they will complement the existing elements of the room and decide on the overall vibe you want to achieve . Will it be calming with relaxing neutrals ? Or are you wanting to make a statement with explosive , vibrant colours ? If you ’ re looking to achieve a photogenic wall , a unified approach is probably the way forward , so choosing colours that work together is vital .
COLLECT , COLLECT , COLLECT
OUR TOP TIPS : Add in something personal … Time to get creative and add a little personal flair to your gallery wall . If you ’ ve previously made your own work , or you enjoy taking photographs and have a particular favourite , this is your chance to showcase them . Include a friend ’ s work , a child ’ s drawing , postcards from family or make use of those old family portraits ; polaroids work really well for smaller , intricate walls .
If you ’ re stuck , take inspiration from a favourite piece , and use this as your starting point ; this will become the gallery wall ’ s anchor and everything else should then fall into place . Remember , gallery walls don ’ t necessarily have to be just frames hung directly on the wall ; you could potentially include shelving and introduce other key pieces : think plates , posters , postcards , vintage prints and photographs – creating the perfect balance of colours and textures is the key to getting it right . Always remember though to stick to things you love .
The key thing to remember when choosing your art : gallery walls don ’ t have to be a quick fix ; no great gallery wall was created in a day . Take your time , search the web , browse the charity and vintage shops , and continue building on it until you are happy .
