THE BIDDENDEN PROJECT
Dating back to 1540 , The Biddenden Project is Grade II listed , which meant that the space needed a design that would be in keeping with the old , stunning period features of the house , but also a design that would bring the space into the 21st century . “ The kitchen sits in a traditional oakbeamed room that then opens out to a minimal extension with doors that fold back to make the most of the view ,” says William Durrant , owner of Herringbone Kitchens . “ The brief was to achieve a contemporary , luxurious , classic feel that would work with the old building .”
Why was Herringbone chosen for this project ?
Herringbone Kitchens was chosen because of their flexibility , locality and understanding of what was needed and required : “ Luke is a great designer and was a joy to plan the kitchen with ,” explain clients , Peter and Lysa . “ We already had pretty solid ideas but he added flourishes and details we hadn ’ t thought of . He understood what we were trying to achieve , and that we didn ’ t have a blank cheque so it needed to be reasonable and realistic .”
The design brief / objective needed to fit the stunning features of the house , how did you overcome this ?
Due to the nature of this project , the kitchen had to be entirely bespoke to fit in with the Grade II listed home . The client loves to entertain and the kitchen is where everyone gathers every day . Believe or not , there are actually 13 built-in appliances within this design . The vision the client had from the outset was simple : “ Being able to sit at the island , while listening to music with a cold glass of something in my hand , the glass doors folded back watching the sun set across the fields . That is the vision we had from the outset and it never gets old .”
How did you start the redesign process for The Biddenden Project ?
The redesign of the space was straightforward in the sense that what is now the kitchen was being used for another purpose and the existing kitchen was in the room adjacent , so it was a blank canvas as such . This was perfect , and very practical for the client as they had a working kitchen throughout the project .
