BY POLLY HUMPHRIS
THE PAST TWO YEARS HAS BEEN ODD , HASN ’ T IT ? FORCED INTO A MANDATORY HIBERNATION , WHAT BEGAN WITH A CRAZE FOR BAKING BANANA BREAD , AN OVERWHELMING URGE TO SORT THE WARDROBES OUT , OR FINALLY JET WASH THE GARDEN FENCE , THEN SLOWLY TRICKLED INTO A REALISATION THAT COVID WAS GOING NOWHERE FAST AND MOST OF US TURNED TO SNACKING ( AND WINE ) FOR COMFORT . 40 % OF US , IN FACT , ACCORDING TO A RECENT SURVEY BY PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND ( PHE ), WHICH CONCLUDED THAT THE AVERAGE WEIGHT GAIN PER ADULT DURING LOCKDOWN SITS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 3-5 KILOS .
Of course , your value as a person has nothing to do with how much you weigh , and we ’ re not suggesting anyone who ’ s put on a few pounds should diet to look a certain way , what we are acutely aware of is that the foods most of us run to for comfort – chips , cheese , pastries , and the ultimate frenemy , sugar – make us feel sluggish , irritable and anxious when not eaten in moderation . Healthy eating can be the most challenging of all good intentions , but there ’ s no doubt it makes you feel better , so we ’ ve done the research for you and put together a handy little health guide to set you on the right path .
