PETS
FOR THE LOVE OF

PETS

SO APRIL IS FINALLY UPON US , AND THAT CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING ; IT IS OFFICIALLY THE START OF NATIONAL PET MONTH – A FOUR-WEEK EXCUSE TO LOVE ON OUR PETS JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE !
Pets are a staple of English culture , from the Queen ' s adorable Corgis , to childhood goldfish , to the proud British tabby cats who prowl the city streets at night . It ' s clear that us Brits have always had an affinity towards animals , so much so that we were the first country in the world to start an animal welfare charity . So clearly Britain is one of the most pet friendly countries in the world , but many other cultures actually beat us to the punch when it came to the concept of owning pets – which only became widely acceptable in England in the 18th century .
In fact , many ancient cultures have kept pets for thousands of years including the Ancient Egyptians who loved and worshiped cats ; and indigionous Americans who kept dogs as pets for millennia . It is no surprise then that the dog is thought to have been the world ' s first pet , and with their wagging tails and cheeky faces can you blame our ancestors for being hypnotised by those puppy eyes ?
It is thought that approximately 59 % of UK households currently have a pet , and though some tastes have wandered towards the exotic – believe it or not it is legal to own an octopus and a tarantula in the UK – most people opt for a more traditional companion . So in order to celebrate our wonderful hopping , purring , wagging and flying friends we thought we would go all out this April to celebrate ‘ The Pet ’– and if you yourself are a pet lover you might want to stick around for the fluffiest , furriest , pet-friendliest content in town !
