PRIMARY SCHOOL RAISES FUNDS TO SUPPORT PUPILS ’ WELLBEING BY RECYCLING THE “ UNRECYCLABLE ”

CLAIRE HOLMES , PASTORAL LEAD AT LANGAFEL CE PRIMARY SCHOOL , HAS RAISED MORE THAN £ 850 IN DONATIONS TO FUND PERSONALISED RESOURCES THAT SUPPORT THE MENTAL AND SOCIAL WELLBEING OF PUPILS BY COLLECTING HARD-TO-RECYCLE WASTE AT THE SCHOOL .
More than 111,294 units of waste have been collected to be recycled through TerraCycle , the world leader in collecting and recycling waste that cannot be recycled through council collections .
For each unit of waste collected , TerraCycle points are earned which are redeemed as monetary donations to the Friends of Langafel School ( FOLs ).
Pladis biscuit wrappers , Colgate oral care products , Pringles tubes and Hovis bread bags are just a few examples of the waste that can be dropped off at the school ’ s public dropoff location . This waste would otherwise be destined for landfill or incineration .
Local residents are encouraged to collect and drop off their waste to ensure it is recycled and to boost the funds that go towards supporting pupils ’ social , emotional and mental health .
The donations fund personalised resources bought to suit individual children ’ s requirements including games , books , puppets and toys .
Ms Holmes , who set up and manages the public drop off location explains : “ Providing the best possible pastoral support for our pupils is something we have always championed at Langafel Primary School .
“ Being able to raise extra funds to support this whilst recycling a whole host of waste that the local council can ’ t accept means that by dropping off your waste to our location , you ’ re not only doing something great for the environment , but our school community too .”
The collected waste Ms Holmes sends in to TerraCycle is recycled by shredding , cleaning and turning into a pellet format which can then be used by manufacturers to create new generic plastic products such as outdoor furniture , lumber and construction applications , reducing the need to extract new resources from the planet .
Ms Holmes concluded : “ We ’ ve been amazed by how brilliant our local community has been at collecting and dropping off their waste over the years , and I ’ d encourage anyone who is yet to make use of the programme to start now . You can drop off the waste we collect to Langafel Primary School between 8am and 6pm during term time .”
