LONDON
HEARTFELT HOSPITALITY , RELAXED ENCLAVES AND TRUSTED STANDARDS AWAIT AT
THE RESIDENT SOHO
BY SAMANTHA READY
IN THE HEART OF ONE OF THE CAPITAL ’ S MOST THRIVING DISTRICTS , THE RESIDENT SOHO OFFERS A WELCOME ESCAPE FROM ITS DOORSTEP BRIGHT LIGHTS , BIG CITY VIBE , WITH A NEW TAKE ON REFINED STAYCATIONING AND NOT A HINT OF TYPICAL HOTEL IN SIGHT .
Part of The Resident Group ( formally known as the Nadler ), which have developed a slick offering of bang-in-the-heart-of-the-action boutique abodes across the capital and Liverpool – including neighbouring The Resident Covent Garden which recently nabbed No1 spot on TripAdvisor no less – the hotel opened its shiny , newly refurbished doors in February 2020 , only to have to promptly close them again . Having ridden out the hospitality limbo nightmare , it does mean that those checking in today get to enjoy that brand spanking newness for a little longer with perhaps a greater appreciation for their not-to-be-taken-for-granted-again city break .
Now , for a hotel in the heart of the action , The Resident Soho is surprisingly quiet and secluded . Located on Carlisle Street which intersects Dean Street , the townhouse-style building is set back from the main thoroughfare , bringing a calm air , and is instantly recognisable thanks to the imposing and beautiful winged statue of Selene , the moon goddess , set resplendent above the entrance .
The bronze figure , creation of sculptor and contemporary artist Hew Locke , is the first glimpse of the refined yet bold approach to design that trickles throughout the hotel , from the first steps across the revolving door threshold , past the minimal yet designled floral displays and deep green velvet sofas to the contemporary rooms and suites above ; the nod to great British design is further marked by additions from designers including Paul Smith and Tom Dixon , and furnishings from Alter House .
Where the downstairs lounge areas are a retro glamour of deep colours , sensual textures and inviting , playful charm , bedrooms are a lesson in sleek , cool design done well .
Crisp white walls , deep textured grey carpets and dark wood finishes to the large king-size bed , bedsides and desk are offset with subtle pops of colour from deep velvet cushions in our own superior room , which is spacious enough to offer the addition of another fold out bed if required . It was modern yet comfortable , luxurious yet homely .
As the name suggests , the Resident Group ’ s ethos is for guests to indeed become residents of the neighbourhood in their own right , even if just for the night , hence why the initial surprise of finding there is no onsite restaurant , see I told you it wasn ’ t typical , is replaced with an ‘ ahhh that makes sense ’ acknowledgement .
Aside from the selection of drinks and snacks available at the hotel and the ample and well conceived concierge list of the best places within a stone ’ s throw for everything from brunch ( don ’ t miss Scarlett Green – so worth it for its Insta-worthy plushness , cool Aussie vibes , and delicious dishes ) to midnight sweet treats – which of course can be easily Deliveroo ’ d to your hotel front door as much as enjoyed in a restaurant depending on your preference – each room come handily equipped with its own mini kitchen .
Tucked away behind a cleverly disguised pocket door , so subtle that Mr R took great pleasure in the grand reveal when I stood dumbfounded trying to work out where the bottled water was , you will find not your average mini-bar , oh no , The Resident ’ s offering combines sink , microwave , mini fridge , kettle , Nespresso , and even ample cutlery too , all wrapped up in one discreet package .
As well as its serene abode , contemporary luxe finish and welcoming service , of course the main draw for The Resident Soho is its location .
Just a five-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road , less than 10 minutes from Oxford Circus and , much to the delight of music superfan Mr R , around the corner from the photospot for the famous Oasis album cover , this is prime West End exploration territory ; certain to lead you right to heard of good shopping , good eating and good times , before swiftly depositing you back for a good slumber too .
