CANTERBURY BUILDINGS WIN PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARDS

THE MALTHOUSE AND THE KING ' S SCHOOL , CANTERBURY INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE HAVE BOTH BEEN AWARDED RIBA NATIONAL AWARDS FOR 2021 FOLLOWING THE ANNOUNCEMENT IN AUGUST THAT THE BUILDINGS HAD WON REGIONAL AWARDS .
The Malthouse was named South East Building of the Year 2021 and received a South East Award 2021 and the South East Conservation Award 2021 from the Royal Institute of British Architects with the International College also picking up a South East Award 2021 .
The judges unanimously agreed that The Malthouse is " an absolute exemplar of how to repurpose an existing building for a range of uses and users , in an imaginative , honest and sensitive way and is a credit to everyone involved ". They also commented that the International College is a " highly effective " and " boldly modern " building .
Mark Taylor , bursar at The King ’ s School , Canterbury said : “ I am so delighted with the result from the RIBA ; it represents having a very clear vision and years of careful planning . We are so lucky to have benefited from such incredible design and co-ordination skill from two outstanding firms of architects ( Walters and Cohen and Tim Ronald Associates ) as well as such great work and support from the wider professional team . Not only is the Malthouse such a critically important school facility but I am so pleased that it benefits Canterbury and the wider community as well .”
Founded in 597 , The King ’ s School , Canterbury is an academic co-educational boarding school at the heart of the historic city of Canterbury .
The King ’ s School , Canterbury International College is a residential school for overseas pupils with small classes , additional language provision and specialist staff , for pupils aged 11-16 . All teaching and accommodation is in a purpose-built building designed by Londonbased architects Walters and Cohen .
Used for school performances and open to the public , The Malthouse Theatre has an audience capacity of 384 , as well as offering dance and drama studios , on-site dining , and a spacious workshop backstage .
