A CHARITABLE LESSON
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS YOU LEARNED AT SCHOOL , READING , WRITING , MAYBE MATHS ? BUT OFTEN IT ’ S NOT THE INDIVIDUAL EXPERTISE THAT WE TAKE AWAY FROM CLASSES WE PARTAKE IN , BUT THE LIFE LESSONS THAT WE INTERNALISE FROM THEM THAT HOPEFULLY MAKE US BETTER PEOPLE . MANY OF US EXPLORED OUR CREATIVITY THROUGH ART LESSONS , HOW TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES THROUGH PHYSICAL FITNESS , AND HOW TO BE OPEN , HONEST AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORS THROUGH ENGLISH LESSONS . BUT PERHAPS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS WE LEARN THROUGH OUR SCHOOLING IS TO BE CHARITABLE , AND TO HELP THOSE LESS FORTUNATE THAN OURSELVES . HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE CHARITABLE ENDEAVOURS TO BE CELEBRATED AT OUR KENTISH SCHOOLS .
THE KING ’ S SCHOOL
The King ’ s School ( www . kings-school . co . uk ), Canterbury could quite possibly claim to be the oldest education charity giver in the UKwith their history of generous work , and their plans for the future .
1 . What charitable endeavours does The King ’ s School have planned for the coming academic year ?
Pupils and staff regularly raise thousands of pounds for worthwhile causes both in the UK and overseas . The School selects a ‘ Charity of the Term ’ at the beginning of each term with charities put forward by pupils , and a vote is subsequently taken . A highlight of the year is the sale of carnations by Walpole House around Valentine ’ s Day . Each carnation goes to the recipient with a valentine
message attached on a ribbon and over 5,000 carnations are purchased every year .
2 . What kind of charity work did King ’ s complete in the 2020 / 2021 school year ?
The year may have been disrupted by the Covid pandemic but that didn ’ t hinder the fundraising efforts of pupils at King ’ s . During the lockdown period many pupils chose to raise funds individually or in small groups . A number of group activities raised money for the Charities of the term : Farms for City Children , Hospice UK , and Rising Sun - a Canterbury-based charity countering Domestic Violence and abuse in East Kent . Student Will Gaffney even founded his own charity , Bat For A Chance , which provides cricket equipment to underprivileged communities around the world . The charity has already provided kits for cricketers in Uganda , Rwanda , Sierra Leone , Sri Lanka and the West Indies . In January he received a glowing tribute from Sri Lankan Test legend Kumar Sangakarra and announced a partnership with the Sri Lankan charity of which Sangakarra is a trustee .
3 . Why does The King ' s School believe engaging in charity work at a young age is beneficial to students ?
The School encourages pupils to recognise that others may be in need and that it is our collective responsibility to help if we are able to . Pupils are able to develop skills which they can take into their future lives and careers . Fundraising and volunteering allows them to see the world in a different way and can be a hugely rewarding experience .
