OUTDOOR LEARNING AT ST EDMUND ’ S SCHOOL CANTERBURY

ST EDMUND ’ S SCHOOL IS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF A 62-ACRE SITE ON A HILL OVERLOOKING CANTERBURY . THE STUNNING LOCATION INCORPORATES AMAZING VIEWS OF THE CITY AND CATHEDRAL , WIDE OPEN SPACES , SHADED WOODED AREAS , HIDDEN GARDENS WITH NATIVE AND EXOTIC PLANTS , AND SEVERAL INSPIRATIONAL FOREST SCHOOL LOCATIONS .
Outdoor learning is a big part of the curriculum at St Edmund ’ s and we are fortunate to have the space to inspire the children with a wide range of activities and learning opportunities away from the classroom .
During the past year we have developed our outdoor learning programme , increasing the amount of time the children spend outside and expanding the range of activities to include curriculum areas … such as art and design projects , creative writing , maths investigations , and science experiments . We are lucky to be able to call on the expertise of staff across the whole school community who can support these activities .
Our Forest School sites have distinctive environments ; one is a beautiful woodland pond area with a bridge and island , the second , also in a woodland setting , has a wooden den , mud kitchen , a trim trail as well as a giant tepee in a meadow setting .
“ Learning at St Edmund ’ s is interactive , varied and fun ,” says head of nursery and pre-prep , Julia Exley . “ We provide an inspirational learning environment that takes place in the classroom as well as the grounds of St Edmunds . We are focused on the needs of the individual children , and ensure they are given the time and space to develop their creative and academic capabilities ”.
Adopting the theme # ConnectWithNature has given nursery and pre-prep a broad scope in which to evolve and implement different parts of their curriculum to the great outdoors . The opportunities available to the children through the expertise and knowledge of the professional teaching staff within the wider school is incomparable ; from the head of science creating creature habitats and gravity defying kites to the CCF leaders demonstrating the art of building shelters .
We are ambitious for our pupils , and provide a kind , caring and supportive environment in which their confidence can grow and their talents thrive . The school aims to nurture original thinkers who have a desire to make a difference .
St Edmund ’ s nursery and pre-prep starts at 3 years old and gives an exceptional beginning to a child ’ s education , whilst allowing a seamless transition to our junior and senior schools .
